The English Premier league was founded May 27th 1992. It was created by clubs in the Football League First Division. From 1993 to 2001 the league was called the FA Carling Premiership. In 2001 Barclaycard took over and since then it has been called the Barclays Premier League. 

Manchester United won the first Premier league title in the 1992 - 93 season. They finished 10 points clear of Aston Villa. The following season Manchester United retained the title.
